At 11 am the boat arrived in Tianjin. The train left at 3.30 pm; on the road, loess everywhere, nothing else to see beside the occasional shrub or tree. We arrived in Beijing at around 7.30 pm; I lodged at the Changfa inn. Later at night, I visited Mr. Xu Mingbo at the Shan-Hui county guild, where I obtained a copy of the Catalogue of Temples of the Ancient Sages in China and Vietnam.

In the morning, I moved into the Shan-Hui county guild. I then headed to the Ministry of Education on a cart pulled by a mule, and returned later. I sent a letter to my younger brother. Laying on the bed at night, I must have spotted thirty to forty bedbugs in less than half an hour, so I ended up sleeping on the table so to avoid them.

In the evening, I dined at Guanghe ju. I asked the house servant to change my bed, only then I could sleep.
